The churn has a very long history, there is evidence of its use 2000 years BC. Hr., being mentioned in biblical works. In the form we know, the churn appeared in the 6th century AD. In the European tradition, the churn was primarily a tool used by women, making butter being an important responsibility, along with other household chores. In earlier buttermaking traditions, nomadic cultures put milk in leather bags and produced butter either by manually shaking the bag or possibly by attaching the bag to an animal. Thus, the cream was whipped simply by the movement of the animal. Some scholars believe that this is how the process of creating butter was discovered. Some cultures use a similar process, where a bag is filled with milk, tied to a stick and energetically agitated. The most prominent type of churn is the one called "by sinking", which is a container, usually wooden, where the action of beating the butter is created by the vertical movement of a wooden stick at the beginning of which is attached or circular piece of wood . Another type of putina is the one with paddles, which has a handle and, once spun, activates some wooden paddles, which move and beat the cream. The barrel-shaped putenei was also widely used. This type of gun is basically a barrel turned on its side with a crank attached. In some types the crank rotates a vane device inside the barrel, as in the aforementioned vane putty, in others it rotates the entire barrel horizontally or vertically, depending on its construction. Whipping the cream in this way turns the milk into butter. The keg was one of the agricultural innovations of 18th century Europe. A particularly new, remarkable invention was the little thing integrated into the rocking chair. This putinei, invented by Alfred Clark, consists of a putinei attached to a rocking chair which, while moving, also shakes the putinei.

It is still used in Romanian households, I have met it in most of Romania's folklore areas. It is also known as "bădâi", "budăi" or "masleancă".  bădâi, budăi sau masleancă.
