Vintage pipes

  • The history of the pipe began in ancient times. The first image of a pipe depicts the god Shiva (3000 BC). They were also found next to Egyptian mummies, and then in Ancient Greece they were used by Hypocrates, the 'father of medicine', to create remedies against certain diseases.

The navigator and poet Sir Walter Raleigh (1552 - 1618) was a great fan of the pipe, smoking it from morning till night. Even his dying wish was to smoke one last pipe, but this smoking device only became wildly popular in the 18th century. The custom was adopted by many people, and pipes were made of iron or silver at the time.

In the following period, clay and stone pipes appeared, followed by refined designs made of glass.

The first pipes used in Europe were made of clay. Clay pipes with small bowls were preferred in England because at the beginning of the introduction of tobacco into Europe the demand was much greater than the supply, and in order to satisfy their cravings for a longer period of time before the next stock arrived, English gentlemen had to keep their tobacco supply well drained, thus smoking in small quantities.

There were two types of clay pipe fashionable in 17th century England: the short (cutty) and the long (churchwarden) pipe. Only the wealthy could afford to smoke the more expensive long pipe inlaid with various designs. If the wealthy gentlemen wore their pipes in expensive and sophisticated cases, the common people hung them on the brim of their hats.

Today there are five types of pipes in the world. Many prefer porcelain pipes, with a long spiral-shaped tube and two bowls. Others prefer cherry wood pipes. But the most popular are the seafoam pipe, the mace pipe and the corncob pipe.

Pipe smoking was fashionable even among women for a time, and today women pipe smokers are numerous in China, where cigarettes are rarely found outside big cities.

After a while pipe smoking by women began to be regarded as a disgrace. There is an anecdote that has survived from that time: A young woman had retired for her coffee break and lit up a pipe. "What a disgraceful habit," said an elderly woman sitting next to her. "I'd rather commit adultery than smoke." "That's what I'd do," the young woman replied, "but there's not enough time in the coffee break."
